- Abstract
- This thesis is a study of the possibilities of introducing freight trams on tram networks in cities and to examine the possibilities in Helsingborg as a concrete example.
The city of Helsingborg has plans to in the next ten years start the building of a new tram network in the city, a measure implemented to increase the capacity of the public transport system and to improve the environment in the city. Measures to reduce the congestion and environmental impact in Helsingborg are interesting since the air quality in the city has been poor for a long time.
Similar projects with cargo transportation on tramways exist or have existed in, for example, Amsterdam, Dresden, Paris and Zurich. With the experiences from these projects, a number of... The city of Helsingborg has plans to in the next ten years start the building of a new tram network in the city, a measure implemented to increase the capacity of the public transport system and to improve the environment in the city. Measures to reduce the congestion and environmental impact in Helsingborg are interesting since the air quality in the city has been poor for a long time.
Similar projects with cargo transportation on tramways exist or have existed in, for example, Amsterdam, Dresden, Paris and Zurich. With the experiences from these projects, a number of criteria have been developed to describe some conditions that a city would need to successfully start and run a project like this. These criteria concern, for instance, that there should be a strong continuous flow of goods, and that it would not result in extra transhipments which take a long time and increase costs of the transport.
In Helsingborg, it would be possible to transfer parts of grocery retail company ICA's transports within the city from trucks to the tramway. Several of the city's ICA stores are located in the vicinity of the planned tramway and the goods come from a large central warehouse which is located in Långeberga, east of the city. (Less)
