Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
The fact that food is something that we all have in common and that it brings people together has been the starting point for this thesis work. The project has resulted in a vibrant food center in the future city district Nyhamnen in Malmö. Here people from all over the city can gather around the People’s Kitchen and Diner, a wine bar, urban farming facilities, food markets and more. The inspiration comes from how we use the domestic kitchen and my intention has been to create possibilities to let people meet in a similar way but at a larger scale in Malmököket. An important aspect of my work has been to create functions and activities that complement each other for varying interactions but also for different hours of the day and... (More)
The fact that food is something that we all have in common and that it brings people together has been the starting point for this thesis work. An important aspect of my work has been to create functions and activities that complement each other for varying interactions but also for different hours of the day and throughout the year.

The food center Malmököket is aiming to function as a kind of respite in the city - in an increasingly hectic world where we are constantly online, available and exposed this food center shall provide a space where you can stop, pause and play. The choice of functions and the layout of these has therefore deviated from a “normal” planning process in order to question and challenge how we can design public buildings and places.

Consequently, this thesis work promotes an alternative societal direction - it is a vision of how we could live our lives in the city more cooperatively and socially. My proposal investigates how architecture, in this case with the food theme as a tool, can be a part of a snowball effect where we are moving away from mass consumption, stress and segregation towards a more including society that embraces democracy and fellowship.

The site chosen for this work is located adjacent to the old butcher’s area Slagthuset in Malmö. The area has a history of food trading which creates a contextual, intriguing connection to my theme. Furthermore, the site will end up having a very central location in the future Malmö. My intent has been to create attraction to the area by designing a welcoming building with a strong identity. Malmököket is aiming to foster new ways of using the city by gathering around food-related activities. (Less)
