- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis has been to develop a deeper understanding of the security or insecurity students at Lund University essentially seem to experience on and around campus area. But the thesis has a deeper purpose, which is to let the paper culminate in a discussion on how security or insecurity can generate a deeper understanding of fear. This thesis assumes an abductive approach, which made so that the thesis is based on two separate collection methods. This is due to the thesis initially worked on the basis of a hypothetical assumption that the students would be afraid because of the threats that were directed against the university in October 2015. This is due to the thesis initially worked on the basis of a hypothetical assumption that the students would be afraid because of the threats that were directed against the university in October 2015. But the thesis took an unexpected turn when the empirical results of the focus group showed signs of trust for other student. Due to the abductive method which allows the researcher to read theory parallel to the empirical data analyzed. This approach meant that when the second empirical data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, the interview guide changes as a result of the parallel reading of empiricism and theory
Both the empirical results of the focus group and from the semi-structured analyzed based on a micro-sociological perspective and the choice of the theoretical framework fell on Erving Goffman, Randall Collins and James. W. Messerschmidt. The choice of these particular theorists was a consequence of the choice of the abductive method and resulted in a discussion among other things on how a chain of interaction rituals generates a legitimate knowledge of other students. At Lund’s University students seem to possess this legitimate knowledge about each other, which creating a feeling of security among students. Another conclusion that drew as a result of the empirical material was the realization of gender role influences the degree of security and insecurity among the students, which were analyzed on the basis Messerschmidts theoretical framework.
