Abstract
In 2013 the Swedish Police authority and district administration in Angered, a district in Gothenburg, initiated the operation Trygg i Angered with the aim to increase the safety of the residents. Based on security studies from the years 2013-2015 illegal and reckless driving of mopeds has been a major security problem in Angered. The municipality has targeted action on illegal and reckless driving of mopeds and efforts have generated good results. In this study, we have chosen to take an interest in the experience of security among the residents in Hjällbo, a residential area in Angered. This study aims to investigate experiences from individual residents and examine whether illegal and reckless driving of mopeds is an important part of the residents perceived insecurity. Through qualitative interviews with ten residents in Hjällbo our essay resulted in a presentation of their perceived security in relation to the driving of mopeds in the area and differences in perceived insecurity among men and women. We have analysed the results from an individual perspective by using routine activity theory and gender theory. Our main find is that the illegal and reckless driving of mopeds is not primarily a problem of insecurity, but rather a disturbance. It is the surrounding factors, such as the propensity to commit crime among young moped riders that is threatening the residents. We have on the one hand identified a desirable masculinity among the men interviewed in the study, and on the other hand, a desirable femininity of women. One of our finds is that men men assume a protective role while women assume a caring role. The violent behaviour is remarkable among men, whilst it is non-existent among women. We have, through interviews also identified an anticipated desire to achieve status and masculinity among young moped riders even though we have not interviewed them. The residents believe that antisocial behaviour among young moped riders is linked to the need to achieve the status, and that this behaviour is based on masculinity norms. (Less)
