- Is there a future where architects use VR as a presentation tool? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether architects can improve their presentation skills using Virtual Reality. Can VR complement todays techniques? What kind of techniques for presenting in VR is there today? Another purpose is to develop an application where the model can be easily displayed on mobile devise via Google Cardboard. Method: The method of collecting data is carried out through questionnaires after two tests on the VR presentation produced by the authors. An application for VR presentation is created through an iterative process, this application is the basis of the tests. The VR-presentation is created of a project from JKAB architects that works as a case study. The test subjects are students from LTH and representatives from JKAB architects. Theory and results are compared and analyzed based on the purpose and the problem. Conclusion: Examine if architects can improve their presentation skills by using Virtual Reality. The result from the two test shows that architects can improve their presentation skills by using Virtual Reality. The study has shown that virtual reality is most suited for new productions and densificationprojects but also for projects with a lot of problems. This result is also supported by the theory of literature.
Another purpose is to develop three applications where the model can easily be displayed on a mobile phone via Google Cardboard but also in the Oculus Rift and CAVE.
The applications of the VR-presentations were made for all three VR techniques. All three applications worked well but some optimization can be applied to get a better result. VR presentations were carried out without complications and results were obtained. Can the viewer get a better idea of an object in VR compared to current presentation techniques?
In both tests and the interviews, the majority thought that their perception of urban space and its volumes were better in VR. This conclusion is also supported by the theory in the literature study. What is most useful for architects, VR goggles or VR room (CAVE)?
Test 2 shows that the Oculus Rift was the most suitable technique for architects to use in their future presentations. In the literature study, one can get an idea of the price situation, the mobility and the size of the technology which was the main reasons behind their choice. Is there a future where architects use VR as a presentation tool?
Test 2 resulted in an unambiguous answer where they all saw a future of VR as a presentation tool. This response is supported by Test 1, the interviews and the literature study. They see a future with VR but want better resolution and navigation. Virtual Reality is most applicable to projects developments and densification projects but also for projects with a lot of problems. Even projects with many different stakeholders with different backgrounds and knowledge. Virtual Reality is best suited as complement to today’s techniques. (Less)
