Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
How should the technological and pedagogical development during the last few decades affect the design of new schools? Can school architecture contribute to good physical and mental health in young teenagers?

How should the technological and pedagogical development during the last few decades affect the design of new schools? Can school architecture contribute to good physical and mental health in young teenagers?

The way of working and targets for what the students should achieve have changed a lot in Sweden during the last few decades. Information technology has fundamentally changed the ease of access to information as well as the way we work and how we communicate. According to the Swedish curriculum each student is expected to take a lot more responsibility for his or her own learning and be able to define questions as well as search for and evaluate information. Social skills are considered increasingly important and teamwork is becoming a common activity. The role of the teacher has also changed a lot and the curriculum stipulates that the teachers should work in teams and act more like tutors than traditional teachers.

The needs of smaller children in terms of secure and stimulating school environments have received some attention in theory as well as in practice. When it comes to young teenagers there has been very little research and very few initiatives. At the same time, the physical and mental health of teenagers have dramatically deteriorated. Teenagers find themselves in the borderland between childhood and the adult world, which means a search for identity. There is a need for small secure environments but at the same time they have a great need to expand their social network and hang out with people of their own age in smaller and larger groups.

The aim of this thesis is to develop a number of design strategies that can be used when designing the future schools for young teenagers. Our design strategies should take new technology as well as new pedagogical trends into account as well as encourage good physical and mental health. In order to test our design strategies we will also design a secondary school on a site in the city center of Malmö. (Less)
