- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis has been to study the fulfilment of traffic related sustainability goals for newly planned areas in the Stockholm region and to reach a broader understanding about why some goals are achieved and why some are not. Traffic planning is a tool that can be used to influence the society towards a sustainable development and to affect the conditions of our environment for future generations in the long term. Shorter trips should be dominated by walking and cycling, longer trips within cities should be performed by public transport. For these modes of transportation to be selected instead of cars, it is necessary that they are improved to meet the increased demand. Sustainability goals get more and more focus within the planning of new areas, but those goals are rarely reached. This thesis highlights several possible actions to achieve a more sustainable environment through traffic planning and how to use them to measure fulfilment of traffic related sustainability goals. It also sums up important experiences and thoughts of people working with traffic related sustainability goals at a daily basis. When comparing the goals presented in the strategic policy documents with the planned sub areas some conclusion were drawn. Many of the goals were unmeasurable due to their subjective and vague nature. It was also shown that more goals concerning the limitation of cars were not reached than the ones concerning attractive walking and cycling. Two factors influencing goal fulfilment are conflicting goals and ambition to achieve goals. (Less)
