The asylum-process in Europe was a broken system, according to the Swedish government. As a response to this the Swedish government introduced border-controls to check if people were ”allowed” to travel to Sweden or not. The purpose of this essay is to analyse through the theory of ontological security, based on experience from the border-controls, five interviewed individuals who all have at some occasion been asylum-seeking refugees in Sweden versus the Swedish state’s point of view. When the interviewed individuals all in their past have experienced ontological insecurity in their home countries they now experience ontological security in Sweden. The Swedish government introduced the border-controls to secure the state’s ontological security, and the impact of this for the five individuals was surprisingly positive, which reveals in this essay.
