Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore psychologists’ experiences in therapy with patients suffering from psychosis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six psychologists who worked with patients with psychotic disorders. The collected material was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, which led to identification of four main themes: Sharing the wordless, Minding the patient’s fragility, Self-doubt and trust and Inability to be a therapist. One of the experiences described by the interviewees was the feeling of something wordless received from the patient. This was demonstrated by the psychologists’ experiences of themselves losing reality testing or, with more severe psychotic disorders, experiencing the... (More)

This was demonstrated by the psychologists’ experiences of themselves losing reality testing or, with more severe psychotic disorders, experiencing the patient’s emptiness as inducing drowsiness and being difficult to bear. The psychologists perceived the patients as fragile, which triggered a desire to support and help the patient, but also a concern whether they might hurt the patient. This led to the therapist’s increased caution and self-doubt. For the psychologists it was important to feel assured in difficult moments and accept the limitations of working with psychotic disorders. Some psychologists could feel unable to reach the patient, or contrarily pulled into the patient’s psychotic imagination. Both situations resulted in loss of sense of agency and therapeutic competence. (Less)
