Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of having premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and how women with PMS manage their symptoms. From these results a theoretical discussion was held regarding suitable psychological treatment and interventions to ease the suffering from PMS. Data was collected through three different focus groups with a total of nine participating women. The topics of discussion were experiences, strategies and needs related to PMS. Qualitative Thematic Analysis was used to analyze the data. This resulted in six different themes: Different Realities, No Energy for Others, The Troublesome Anger, Listen to Myself, An Explosive Topic and PMS is Bigger than Me. The participants described themselves as being different... (More)

The participants described themselves as being different during PMS than otherwise, leading to an impression of oneself as being unreliable. Difficulties with regulating emotions seem to cause suffering, however, the struggle is later forgotten or diminished after the PMS has passed. The participants’ prior experiences with other people having a judgmental attitude towards PMS, an overall low level of knowledge about it and the topic itself being taboo inhibits them from being open with their own PMS. The results of this study are discussed regarding interventions and treatments. Lastly suggestions for further research are made. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
