Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of timeouts in handball, how they are used and what is communicated. A case study was performed with a men’s handball team in the top division in Swedish handball. A combined quantitative and qualitative method was used where the coach’s communication was categorized using Hastie’s (1999) instrument for assessment of coach communication during timeouts. This was followed by semi-structured interviews with the coach and seven players. The results showed that the coach primarily use timeouts for tactical instructions, especially tactically proactive statements, but also psychological statements. Thematic analysis was used in the processing of the interviews, resulting in four main... (More)

Thematic analysis was used in the processing of the interviews, resulting in four main themes: timeout management, focus, authority and cohesion. The results were discussed in relation to the theory of coach behavior, group phenomenon in sports and cognitive aspects such as attention and learning. Finally, proposals were presented on the development of timeout management such as direct and clear instructions, limited information, rest and positive reinforcement. (Less)
