The aim of this study is also to examine the value and meaning of work in relation to newly arrived immigrant women from employment officer’s point of view. I used a qualitative method whereupon the collected material obtained semi-structured interviews with six employment officers. I found this method to be appropriate considering the purpose of this study but also in order to capture a deeper understanding of the selected area of research. The results that emerged in this study is that there are several meaningful factors in the process of establishing newly arrived immigrant women in the labour market according to the respondents. That education, work experience, differing social structures, family support, social capital, language, official actions from authorities and view of the role of women in the family and in society are examples of factors that are important in the establishment process. This study has also shown that the respondents ascribe employment a very high value in this context. However, it has become clear to me that work is an important part of the establishment process in relation to inter alia, structure and routines, social network, identity and status, and to simply be and remain involved in society. That work enables newly arrived immigrant women to access new arenas in society and assume new roles in new contexts. (Less)
