- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The results from this study deepens the understanding of how psychologists and welfare officers experiences therapeutical consultations with clients, and also how they are affected by the secondary mental stress that may occur. The objectives of the study are to examine which strategies the interviewees use to manage the impact difficult consultations may have on them selves, as well as which strategies they practise to maintain a healthy work and private life balance. Semi-structured interviews with seven professionals were carried out and analysed by using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis method. The obtained material was coded into two main categories: descriptions of resources and descriptions of personal strategies. The results show that coaching within the profession and discussions with colleagues are the most useful strategies for finding new solutions in problematic professional issues, and also in obtaining a professional and social support. Lack of time for recovering, high productivity demands and vague organisational structures were found to have the most negative impact. The gathered material reveal a common sense that being self-conscious and able to separate own feelings from patient´s feelings are the most important factors in order to have a professional approach. A balanced emotional distance towards the client, as well as joining different activities when off duty, are commonly important strategies for being able to leave professional issues at work. A discussion on how the study´s findings relate to earlier research and theories is carried out, showing that the results are in line with these to a large extent. (Less)
