- Abstract
- Today in Sweden hitchhiking is a way of transportation that seems to be forgotten or almost dead. The aim with this study is to analyze how hitchhiking can be a distinctive way of travelling in a context where other forms of everyday travelling dominate. The investigation is focused on how hitchhiking can be a different way of travelling, the feelings about the phenomenon and how the meeting between the hitchhiker and the driver can be constructed. The theoretical basis for this study is Sara Ahmed and her theories about orientations and feelings, Zygmunt Bauman and his perspective of fear, Marcel Mauss’s concept about the gifts institution and Jacques Derrida’s theory about hospitality. The results show that hitchhiking is a phenomenon... (More)

The theoretical basis for this study is Sara Ahmed and her theories about orientations and feelings, Zygmunt Bauman and his perspective of fear, Marcel Mauss’s concept about the gifts institution and Jacques Derrida’s theory about hospitality. The results show that hitchhiking is a phenomenon that people today turn away from. Hitchhiking is not the first option when it comes to transportation in everyday life, motoring is. Therefore hitchhiking becomes an alternative way of travelling with feelings connected to it that tell you that “this is the wrong way”. The meeting between the hitchhiker and the driver involves a hierarchy where the feeling of guilt is present. (Less)
