continue to appear and disappear throughout European history, which also appear in the first half of
20th century Denmark; the strict and disciplining mother and the openly loving and permissive
mother. During most of the examined period, the dominant ideal seems to have been the
disciplining mother, which should raise and care for her children with focus on tranquility,
regularity and cleanliness, but by midcentury this ideal starts to get challenged by the ideal of a
more permissive mother, who focuses on her child’s individuality and need for individualized care
and love. (Less)
