(More)

(Less)

The Virtues of Discord - A Study of What the City Wants and an Anticipation of What It Could Be

The subtitle of this thesis which reads: “A Study of What the City Wants and an Anticipation of What It Could Be” bestows upon The City the ability to want, to possess needs and desires. Through this process The City attains agency in relation to its inhabitants. I examine the ideas and motivations of the organism of The City as a cumulative effect of its functions and furthermore ponder how The City, deliberately and unintendedly, perpetually reproduces an idea about itself through its form, rule and use. A notion which develops into fact in the absence of critique.

For an assemblage of people to match the concept of our modern civilization, a certain amount of consensus appears to occasionally be required. However, if agreement evolves into an ideal, there is a risk that unity is replaced by repression. As suggested by Chantal Mouffe and Jacques Rancière respectively, a certain state of perpetual conflict is imperative in order for this potential consensus to be of any value. This thesis investigates how this plays out in urban settings of different scale.
The conflict of who and what that is of value in The City takes place within the realm of the public space. Where you and I appear as desires born out of our meeting. This battleground is molded and effected by The City´s strategies for consensus aided by its architecture. It is on this stage that conflict has the power to allow for tactics that enables the political subjetification of the inhabitants and thereby the possibility to confront the prevailing power structure.
Through the presence of conflict, political subjects are created by entering what Hannah Arendt labeled the space of appearance. This process is, in the words of Judith Butler, the performative act of creating public space. The thesis as a whole locates and visualizes underlying processes involved in the political and physical formation of the public realm in order to establish (Less)
