Abstract
In Swedish youth- and adolescent residential care and juvenile care, there are today people held for either being a threat to themselves, their surroundings or have committed a crime yet are too young to be held in prison. There are also youth and adolescents being placed in these facilities when their surroundings too have become a threat to their own wellbeing. The aim for this study was to find the motivating aspects in their life that impact the will to change their behaviour. Thus we wanted to better understand the motivation of youth and adolescence. The aim for this study was to find the motivating aspects in their life that impact the will to change their behaviour. Thus we wanted to better understand the motivation of youth and adolescence. To obtain results, we used a qualitative method to analyze narratives that youth and adolescent students have written during their time in school within these facilities, where they have had no framework or limitation in their writing process. The documents are on yearly basis published and is accessible for citizens when ordered for free and is also available electronically through Statens Institutionsstyrelse website. The analysis of the empirical data indicated that the relations and networks found both inside and outside the facilities are motivational aspects and seem to be a major factor for their wellbeing. What seem to reinforce a feeling of competence, as motivational factor, among the narrators was their narrated experience of managing to stop using drugs. Their autonomy was also interpreted as a factor for motivation and there was findings of coping strategies used to fight the difficulties experienced, as well as displaying an interest by also addressing their narrative document as a form of help to others in a similar situation. There were findings indicating a positive outcome of having internal locus of control among the youth and adolescents, which also was promoted to others in similar positions. There was findings which show interests in these youth and adolescents to help one another in coping with the context, with many of the documents written addressed to other caretakers as means of feedback and help for future social care work.
