Abstract
Aeromobility and sustainability are current political issues which given available technology today are incompatible. This study aims to through a discourse analysis critically examine how Karlstad Airport as an example of this is constructed as a political matter. Drawing on Maarten Hajers social-interactive discourse analysis, which is operationalised using Carol Bacchis analytical framework the result is structured through four discourses on mobility. The results show how these discourses, called mobility as a right-discourse, technocratic discourse, speedy connectivity-discourse and sustainable mobility-discourse, construct different political problems which can be solved by the local airport and how this process also show different... The results show how these discourses, called mobility as a right-discourse, technocratic discourse, speedy connectivity-discourse and sustainable mobility-discourse, construct different political problems which can be solved by the local airport and how this process also show different actors gain legitimacy as political subjects. Hajer’s discourse-analytical terms storylines and discourse coalitions are used to show how these different discourses can co-exist and produce policy despite their different understandings of the airport. The study finds that the mobility as a rightdiscourse, technocratic discourse and speedy connectivity-discourse have been dominant in constructing the airport as a political issue, while the sustainable mobility-discourse has been silenced. However a potential shift is suggested in 2016, when the speedy connectivity discourse suffers a backlash and the sustainable mobility discourse begins to challenge the current understanding of Karlstad Airport as a political issue.
