- Abstract
- For quite some time multiple variables measuring academic performance in Swedish elementary schools have shown that boys’ achievements have dropped in relation to girls’. Most previous scholars who have studied this phenomenon have had an actor-focused approach. Therefore there is a lack of studies that have analysed how and if structures could contribute with explanations as well as understanding for why boys fall behind. Most previous scholars who have studied this phenomenon have had an actor-focused approach. Therefore there is a lack of studies that have analysed how and if structures could contribute with explanations as well as understanding for why boys fall behind. To fill this gap within the research field the focus of this study is set on analysing whether boys, on a structural level, are given disadvantages opportunities to perform in elementary school. In order to examine if that is the case, a document analysis is conducted where a gender perspective, more specific Connells theories regarding hegemonic masculinity, is applied on the policy documents steering Swedish elementary schools on a national level. Two conclusions are drawn based on the analysis. One, that the content in national policy documents steering Swedish elementary schools contribute to (re)create structures which, according to Connells theories, are considered to give boys disadvantageous opportunities to preform. The second, that gender structures affect how boys and girls behave which further impacts the opportunities the sexes are given by the content in policy documents. (Less)
