Abstract
Over the last decades Sweden’s archival institutions have taken a turn towards becoming open and modern cultural institutions with outreach work. This is especially noted in the City of Malmoe where Malmoe City Archives has undergone a heavy renewal and has among other things been relocated from the prosperous Western Harbour in the outskirts of the city to the more diverse inner city in Möllevången. The modernisation and renewal included extended opening hours, larger public areas, focus on public accessibility and the installation of a small public library. In 2016, mostly due to a more open approach, Malmoe City Archives received the Årets arkiv (Archive of the year) award.

The aim of this master thesis is to examine the factors that have contributed to the changes of Malmoe City Archives. Other cultural institutions in Malmö, such as the main public library, have undergone similar renewal reforms in recent years. Our qualitative research methods have consisted of document analysis as well as semi-structured interviews. Our findings show that there are mainly two factors that have driven the renewal of the City Archives. One being the development towards being a socially sustainable city, where the aims are to “lower the barriers” and to make sure that outreach work is directed towards a more diverse group of users. Inspiration is gathered from Malmoe City Library and Idea stores in London. The Commission for a socially sustainable Malmoe concludes in its report that the lack of meeting places is what results in alienation, segregation and insecurity. Due to this, meeting places or “third places” are a priority within the Cultural Administration, of which the Malmoe City Archives is a part.

The second important factor of the renewal is to contribute to the marketing of Malmoe city and to create an attractive city, both for inhabitants and visitors as well as the private sector. The cultural institutions in Malmoe, for example public libraries and museums, are to contribute to the experience and entertainment sector, which also affects Malmoe City Archives. This broadens the work conducted by the City Archives and leads to similar cultural institutions. We conclude that outreach work is important and vital in order to make the archive known to the public. However, knowledge and expertise in the somewhat traditional archival duties must be seen as an important foundation on which archives are built. (Less)
