The aim of this study was to examine factors in the Balinese society that affected the life situation of persons with disabilities and what factors contributed to creating limitations and opportunities for them. The purpose was also to examine whether inclusion and exclusion could happen simultaneously. The aim of this study was to examine factors in the Balinese society that affected the life situation of persons with disabilities and what factors contributed to creating limitations and opportunities for them. The purpose was also to examine whether inclusion and exclusion could happen simultaneously. Qualitative interviews were performed with representatives from five Non Government Organisations in Bali with focus on disability. The theory base used for the analysis focuses on how factors on a personal, cultural and structural level in the society are creating the circumstances for social groups in that society. This study presents a number of factors in the Balinese society that seems to affect the lives of persons with disabilities and affect their opportunities for equal participation. Both factors that was enabling and preventing inclusion appeared. One of the most significant influencing factors was religion. The study suggests that religion largely influence people's actions and decisions, which can lead to both inclusion and exclusion of persons with disabilities. Increased knowledge of disability was also presented as one of the most important factors for disabled persons inclusion in the society. The study further demonstrated the influence of people with high status positions on residents. These individuals were presented as enabling for increased knowledge among the residents, which could lead to a higher degree of inclusion of persons with disabilities in the Balinese society. (Less)
