Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the representation of Swedishness in current news reporting. Based on the assumption that Swedes – “we” – are presented as a reflection of ethnic minorities – “the Others” – it was presumed that an analysis of the depiction of ethnic minorities in the media in turn would generate an understanding of what Swedishness is claimed to be. The empirical material were current news articles concerning unaccompanied children seeking asylum. By using critical discourse analysis and an analytical model by Teun A. van Dijk results emerged that were later analyzed using postcolonial theory by Edward Said and Ania Loomba, and theory of representation by Stuart Hall. Analysis results showed a representation of the... (More)
The aim of this study was to examine the representation of Swedishness in current news reporting. Analysis results showed a representation of the unaccompanied children as criminals, manipulative, liars, fraudsters, inferiors, ignorant, a threat and chaos. This representation in turn reflected an image of Swedishness characterized by righteousness, honesty, superiority, competence, security, order and peace. The final discussion highlights the racial structures and prejudices that form a part of our news streams, and which mass media forwards to the rest of society on a daily basis, arguing that these, while difficult to avoid, are power structures that are important to be aware of within social work practices.
