Abstract
The case People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson 1995 has been described as the trial of the century. The defendant, a legendary American football icon, was acquitted despite overwhelming technical evidence. How could this be?
This paper tries to give a better understanding of the acquittal by way of religion as a model of explanation. The work tries the relevance of Durkheim’s study of elementary religions and their belief systems and rites as a bonding adhesive for different groups of people. A documentary O.J. Simpson: Made in America dealing with this famous case and the rise and fall of O J Simpson make up the empirical data. The work is limited to a few of the negative rites of religion, viz. the Court System... (More)

The work is limited to a few of the negative rites of religion, viz. the Court System seen as a “sacred object” and functions as a means of punishment and the cultural trauma of the African American Black Community as a bonding narrative. Another aspect of the practice of religion is positive rites which in this paper are subsumed under totemism, viz. sports cult and deification cult, respectively.
The paper discusses emotions due to religious influence resulting in blind spots and deadlock. Religious phenomena in the form of the judicial system and cultural trauma and totemism ,viz. sports cult and deification of sports heroes are pointed to as contributory factors to the outcome of the verdict, based on the documentary. Abstract (Swedish)
Rättsfallet People of the state of California v.
Rättsfallet People of the state of California v.
