- Abstract
- This study aims to investigate the possibility of creating template times for rail works. Furthermore the study identifies a few effects which template times could have on planning of rail works, traffic and economy. Template times are being considered by the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, for the early stages of planning when there is a need to estimate the time required within the railway, to be able to reschedule both traffic and other rail works. The cost of works is affected to a large extent by the time needed, therefore template times could also facilitate cost estimation. Today rail works are planned by the contractors, and this planning should not be replaced, rather template times could work as a complement,... (More)

Today rail works are planned by the contractors, and this planning should not be replaced, rather template times could work as a complement, mainly in the early stages. This study investigates three types of rail works: track switch replacements, track switch inspections and catenary inspections. Data on scheduled and actual time used was collected from rail work schedules and track information systems, and were supplemented by interviews with project managers and engineers within the Swedish Transport Administration. A possible template time for rack switch replacements is 12-16 hours but it needs to be studied further. That time should also be allowed to be adjusted because of local conditions. The study show that a template time of 30 minutes can be set for track switch inspections. Template times could not be determined for catenary inspections in this study, but it might be possible to do so with more data. The conclusion is that template times can be created for some types of rail works, but not all of them. Template times ought to be seen as recommendations which can be adjusted to fit the specific conditions. Some factors to consider when setting template times are work environment and quality of the performed tasks so that the times set are not too tight. (Less)
