Abstract
Swedish cities are under constant development, and this also applies to the city of Lund. To maintain its rich cultural heritage, modernization is conducted in harmony with preservation of the city. The historical structure of the city, with narrow cobblestone streets causes some difficulties in terms of accessibility for the traffic. As the transports to the center of Lund constitutes a strain on the city’s traffic network, it generates an ambition to streamline this flow. Improvements can be made by coordinating the transports within the central parts of the city and thereby create a joint delivery system. However, if such a system is to be successfully implemented it requires knowledge of the traders’ needs. This need for an investigation leads to the purpose of this study, which is: “Investigating and determine the needs and desiderata of traders regarding a joint delivery system within a city center.”
By identifying the needs and desiderata of the traders, it can be determined whether a common delivery system is desirable and also how the system should be designed to meet identified criteria. In order to answer the purpose and mediate the traders’ preferences, a combination of methods was chosen where case studies and a survey were conducted. The case studies were carried out by personal semi-structured interviews, supplemented with information gathered by desktop surveys. Based on the material from the cases, a survey in form of a postal questionnaire was formulated.
In order to address the purpose of this study, relevant theories had to be selected to form a theoretical framework. This framework consists of Porter’s model The value system, definitions of distribution systems and last but not least, the delivery service and its elements along with how they can be evaluated are described.
Subsequently, data obtained from the different case studies are presented. Firstly, the restaurant chain Tugg Burgers is described, followed by case studies of the stores Tant Hulda, Coop Mårtenstorget, MQ Lund City and Åhléns. Finally, a case study of Handelsföreningen Lund is presented in order to explain the needs for a joint delivery system from an objective point of view. In addition, the data obtained by the questionnaire are presented in a schematic manner by using various diagrams and tables. All collected data is then analyzed based on the theoretical framework described previously.
Based upon the collected material it was concluded that the traders in central Lund had major differences in terms of preferences, but that the majority did not have a need for a joint delivery system. The ones that are in need of such a system was identified to be traders which are not part of a retail chain, source goods from a large variety of suppliers and does not use a central warehouse. For these traders, the joint delivery system should offer frequent deliveries at fixed times, mainly early in the working day. Furthermore, traders within central Lund exhibited that the most important aspects of the delivery service are: Delivery reliability, Delivery dependability and Lead time. With these conclusions in mind, some recommendations to Lund Municipality could be made. These are presented along with a potential plan for further actions. Finally, the contributions from the thesis and reflections are presented. (Less)
