Abstract
Authenticity is a concept that permeates contemporary musicology. The term has several meanings. In this bachelor thesis authenticity means fidelity to the time period or so-called sounding authenticity. The work is a study of the traditional jazz festival in Hällevik 2016 where seven bands, according to the festival programme, play jazz as it was played around the 1920’s in the US. The essay answers the question what are the most important properties to make traditional jazz sound authentic. These properties are selected by weighing together results from literature studies and from interviews with experienced jazz musicians. The essay answers the question what are the most important properties to make traditional jazz sound authentic. These properties are selected by weighing together results from literature studies and from interviews with experienced jazz musicians. From these properties the essay discusses the differences between how traditional jazz is played today by contemporary bands and how it was played around the 1920’s. The method used is by selective listening to the properties, compare recordings by today’s bands with original recordings of the same songs.
The survey shows that the most important things in order to achieve authenticity are: improvisation, rhythm, phrasing, repertoire and instrumentation.
The comparison shows some differences between today and around the 1920’s: in some cases more modern improvisations, more triplet feel, differences in instrumentation of some bands and more rare collective improvisations. The conclusion is that the way traditional jazz bands are playing today are more like revival jazz than jazz around the 1920’s. However, the feeling of joy and the want to move your body to the music are unaffected by these differences. (Less)
Popular Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
