Abstract
This study analyzes why right-wing populism has achieved great success in France, unlike in Spain where right-wing populism lacks parliamentary representation. The analysis is theoretical and to some extent statistical and focuses on the economic, social, cultural and political structures of France and Spain, as well as the success of the French Right-wing Party, Front National. By comparing the differences between France and Spain, and by scrutinizing the dynamics of Front National, the study suggests a number of forces that fuel right-wing populist parties in modern Europe. The study shows that France – unlike Spain – is characterised by national patriotism, poorly regulated immigration policies, insufficient economic policies and has... (More)

By comparing the differences between France and Spain, and by scrutinizing the dynamics of Front National, the study suggests a number of forces that fuel right-wing populist parties in modern Europe. The study shows that France – unlike Spain – is characterised by national patriotism, poorly regulated immigration policies, insufficient economic policies and has experiences of terrorism attacks, which all together seem to contribute to the promotion of right-wing populistic parliamentary representation in the country. Spain, on the other hand, does not experience the same levels of national patriotism, faces well regulated immigration policies and economic policies, and has little experiences of terrorism attacks, and has no right-wing populistic parliamentary representation.
