- A core value is characterized by a number of values. To find a distinct definition can be difficult since the values and content differ in meaning for different people. The Swedish Government have lately (2017) however, presented a proposal to strengthen the orientation concerning the Swedish core values in the society orientation for the new citizens (refugees).
The essay examines how the Swedish state demonstrates democracy as a social core value in the integration process for the new citizens. The arguments that gets analyzed have been found in a wide material that is central for the new citizens in their orientation of the social studies. The essay examines how the Swedish state demonstrates democracy as a social core value in the integration process for the new citizens. The arguments that gets analyzed have been found in a wide material that is central for the new citizens in their orientation of the social studies. As a theoretical starting point, Robert Dahl’s five democracy criteria’s have been used and these criteria’s have been materialized based on the polyarchy’s seven principles.
Based on the analyzed material, it can be concluded that the state obligations towards the citizens are of central matter in the depiction of democracy. It is also possible to distinguish three main categories that appears frequently in the material that have been analyzed. Freedom of speech and the right to use the information-flow freely, free and equal elections and last but not least, equal possibilities to ensure citizens equality values. (Less)
