Abstract
This study aims to examine how support persons at anonymous support chat services describe their role in conversations with children who are abused by relatives and how they use their discretion to fulfil this role. Semistructured interviews were made with five support persons working at different anonymous support chats in Sweden. The analysis of data was guided by an interactionist perspective and different theoretical concepts such as discretion, knowledge and power. The study showed that the support persons had different ways to describe their role. Similarities, however, could be found in how they all described themselves as someone that the abused children should be able to talk to about the violence and that they wanted to help the... (More)
This study aims to examine how support persons at anonymous support chat services describe their role in conversations with children who are abused by relatives and how they use their discretion to fulfil this role. Semistructured interviews were made with five support persons working at different anonymous support chats in Sweden. The analysis of data was guided by an interactionist perspective and different theoretical concepts such as discretion, knowledge and power. The study showed that the support persons had different ways to describe their role. Similarities, however, could be found in how they all described themselves as someone that the abused children should be able to talk to about the violence and that they wanted to help the children get out of the violent situation. Furthermore, the study finds that the support persons described their discretion as very limited, mostly because of the anonymity of the children which makes it impossible for the support persons to make interventions outside the chat. Even so, the anonymity made the children feel safe and motivated which created a bigger discretion for the support persons in the specific conversation. The study also showed that the support persons use their knowledge regarding how their different actions in the conversations causes different outcomes for the children. It also showed that the support persons try to support the children to make a change in their own situation by for example encourage them to tell people outside the chat about their situation. (Less)
