- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of children growing up with a sibling with a chronic and/or life-threatening disease by interviewing the healthy children and health care professionals. The object of the study was to understand the healthy children’s view on the level of support given to them during the course of the disease of their siblings. It was also aimed towards understanding how health care professionals, for example counsellors, work to include the healthy children in a family where one child has an illness. The effect of neglecting the healthy children could result in that they later in life may suffer from anxiety and depression. Three healthy children, now over the age of 18 have been interviewed together... (More)

The effect of neglecting the healthy children could result in that they later in life may suffer from anxiety and depression. Three healthy children, now over the age of 18 have been interviewed together with five health care professionals. The data resulting from the interviews was analysed and interpreted by Cullbergs crisis theory and Antonovsky’s KASAM. The result of the study shows that the healthy children experience lack of support during the course of the disease of their siblings. The health care professionals experience lack of support as one factor towards why the healthy siblings are often secluded when working with sick children. The study highlights the importance of working with the entire family when a child becomes ill, not only focusing on the sick child and the child’s parents. The study also shows the importance of remembering the healthy children and through the study it can be established that a close social network surrounding the healthy children is of high importance for their well-being.
