In order to study the reporting about the Nazi demonstration I have interviewed seven news directors on how they framed their news coverage using theories of news valuation (nyhetsvärderingar) and news selection (nyhetsurval). My inertization offers a way of understanding why the news coverage from the demonstration was major, despite the Nazis gathered being half the expected number and the original demonstration route being cancelled. There is an interesting dilemma for all news directors in countries with growing far right groups; you have to report about them – without becoming their megaphone. The results show that the news directors try to live up to their personal view of news valuation and news selection, while at the same time it might be harder to implement them in practice. (Less)
