- Abstract
- In this thesis I investigate the notion of imagination in Romantic thought and in the visual art of William Blake with the aim of making a contribution to theological methodology. In early German Romanticism, as well as in the art of William Blake, the concept of imagination plays a central role in the relationship between the Absolute and the perceiving and knowing subject. My thesis takes its starting point in the assumption that the spiritual experience can best be described in relation to the aesthetic experience. If this assumption

My thesis takes its starting point in the assumption that the spiritual experience can best be described in relation to the aesthetic experience. If this assumption
is taken seriously theological methodology and epistemology need to develop. In this thesis I do this throughout a phenomenological theoretical framework answering the questions: ”How can we understand the notion of imagination in Romantic thought in relation to aesthetic and spiritual experiences?” and ”How can this be useful for the theological methodology?”
In the first part I turn to early German Romanticism examining the thought of Schelling,Schlegel and Novalis in relation to the thought of Kant. In the second part I turn to the painting of William Blake, focusing on his understanding of the imagination in relation to the symbol of the vortex. In the third part I suggest a way in which the notion of imagination can contribute to theological methodology. In this part I take my starting point in the understanding of revelation.
Through examining the understanding of imagination in early German Romanticism and in the paintings of William Blake I conclude that the imagination can play a central role in a theological methodology both as a fundamental condition for all knowledge but also for a deeper understanding of the relation between the human being and the transcendent, by being the transformative motion of the in-between.
