Abstract
The study circle is a cultural and educational phenomenon that has fundamentally affected Sweden and continues to do so even today. The present study investigates the Swedish study circle as a medium. This is done by looking at the notions about what the study circle would be during its early years (1902-1922), through the Swedish Good Templars and Oscar Olsson, also known as “the father of the study circle”. The thesis is based on Oscar Olssons publications about the study circle and the journals Bokstugan and Studiecirklarna. The theoretical framework consists of Lisa Gitelman's theories about protocols and James Carey's distinction between the ritual and transmission perspective of communication. Earlier research has not paid attention... (More)

The thesis is based on Oscar Olssons publications about the study circle and the journals Bokstugan and Studiecirklarna. The theoretical framework consists of Lisa Gitelman's theories about protocols and James Carey's distinction between the ritual and transmission perspective of communication. Earlier research has not paid attention to the form of the study circle. This is something I investigate through using the media historical theoretical framework.

The notions about what the study circle would be established norms about when, where and how the information would be consumed. By investigating the notions through my media historical perspective, the thesis shows how the medium mainly consisted of three parts: the self-education, the book-circulation and the socialization. In additional the thesis shows how the notions about the study circle transferred rituals that would convey a particular cultural movement. The thesis concludes that the communication was imagined to be both material and immaterial, both ritual and transmissional. (Less)
