Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether social work students experience a discrepancy between what they learned at the School of Social Studies and what they experienced in the practical field and, if so, how they describe this discrepancy and how they respond to it. The group of respondents considered of 5 students from Lund University. The study was based on qualitative interviews. The issues that I based my study on were: “Have the students experienced a discrepancy between what they learned at the School of Social Studies and what they experienced in the practical field?”, “If so, in what way?” and lastly; “How does the students handle this discrepancy?”

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether social work students experience a discrepancy between what they learned at the School of Social Studies and what they experienced in the practical field and, if so, how they describe this discrepancy and how they respond to it. The group of respondents considered of 5 students from Lund University. The study was based on qualitative interviews. All of the students expressed that they did not feel as if the school had given them all the devices to be able to handle situations in their future profession that may require more than the everyday work. They also expressed that they found that there were a discrepancy between what the school of social studies teaches and the social work they have experienced. The respondent also expressed their thoughts regarding the education they have received, and brought forth the lack of solution thinking in the education.

I found Leo Festinger’s cognitive dissonance theory to be a useful theory for my analysis. (Less)
