The Simplicity of Football

Abstract
Football, or soccer as the Americans call it, is the
world’s most popular sport. Why is that? I believe it
has something to do with the simplicity of the game.
Compared to a lot of other sports, the only piece
of equipment you need to play is a ball. With only
a ball, a game of football could be played almost
anywhere - in the park, at the beach, against a wall
or on the street.

One of the reasons I believe the sport is so popular,
is that it’s so accessible for people. Another aspect
is that it connects people. When football is played
in the open public space, outside the enclosed foot-
ball pitch, it creates a much more spontaneous and
inviting atmosphere, that encourage people to par-
ticipate.

inviting atmosphere, that encourage people to par-
ticipate.

The reason people play football varies of course.
Some play for the fun of it, some to become better
footballers and others as a recreational or social
activity.

The way football is played changes depending on
the equipment, amount of participants and the set-
ting. Only playing with two jackets as a goal is a

way different experience than playing with a regular
football goal. When playing in this setting, the goal
becomes less important and the journey towards the
goal more important. Scoring a goal between two
jackets is less exciting than seeing a ball hit the net
behind a goalkeeper. Only having the horizontal el-
ement of a goal limits the style of play and there-
fore also the experience. The vertical element of a
football goal allows players to score goals in more
diverse ways.

Goool is an app that allows the user to create a
virtual football goal, functioning like a regular
goal. By using the camera, the phone tracks the
position of the ball. By placing everyday objects
as goalposts, the user defines the dimensions of
the goal. The app gives a notification when a goal
is scored. Instant feedback is given by sound and
vibration and more visual feedback is displayed on
the screen, e.g. when and how the goal was scored.

Hopefully a product like Goool can put an end to
the constant discussion - goal or no goal? (Less)
