Abstract
Democracies around the world is once again on decline. In this thesis I examine why some democracies face a recession, while other democracies do not. I chose four countries, that I have examined in pairs. Hungary in comparison to Czech Republic and Venezuela compared to Chile, where Hungary and Venezuela are the two countries that have faced a democratic recession. I chose three factors from the Modernization theory and three further factors that I believe have had an impact on democratic recession. My aim was to examine if the factors could explain, in a generalized way, why these countries face democratic recessions. The method used is the method of difference.

My aim was to examine if the factors could explain, in a generalized way, why these countries face democratic recessions. The method used is the method of difference.
My result of the Modernization theory was that the factors could not explain the difference in democracy between the countries. I then examined an alternative explanation, the personalist theory. This theory explained in a good manner the difference in democracy. In Venezuela, the two leaders Chávez and Maduro, have had a great impact on the democratic recession. The democratic recession in Hungary can be explained in the same way, the impact of a personalist leader named Orbán. The democratic recession occurred when these leaders were in power and not before. (Less)
