Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The Sami people were victims of the colonization by the Swedish during the 19th century. This essay poses the question of how, if any, the public exercise of power by the Swedes against the Sami from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century was influenced by social Darwinism. The essay is delimitated in such a manner to treat and discuss the public exercise of power within school, reindeer husbandry, the authority called ‘lappväsendet’ and the chapters as these specific subjects provides knowledge concerning how the exercise of power generally was acted out at the time against the Sami.

The public exercise of power against the Sami has been influenced by social Darwinism on a regional level as well as on a national level. This theory has been expressed in statements, preliminary work and reports. Although there have been no references to the notion of social Darwinism, it has been clearly stated that the theory had an influence on the public exercise of power either directly or indirectly. The Sami political mobilization at the time can also serve as proof of how the public power was used against them.

In many cases, the Sami people have been stigmatized as an inferior race that eventually would become extinct. In other cases, the Sami people have been considered the only people able to survive in the mountain ranges: which also expresses a mindset based on social Darwinism, as it concerns’ natural selection and the survival of the fittest.
