- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of emotion regulation given prior to imagery rescripting, IR, on the treatment outcome in a sample of patients suffering of social anxiety disorder, SAD. Research has shown that IR is an efficient treatment and intervention to process and transform problematic images that occur in SAD.
The study was carried out as a randomized experimential comparison between two groups both receiving IR. The experimental group, received an intervention of emotion regulation consisting of the visualization of a safe place prior to IR, while the control group, received IR alone. The treatment was carried out during one session with 11 participants meeting diagnostic criteria för social anxiety disorder... The study was carried out as a randomized experimential comparison between two groups both receiving IR. The experimental group, received an intervention of emotion regulation consisting of the visualization of a safe place prior to IR, while the control group, received IR alone. The treatment was carried out during one session with 11 participants meeting diagnostic criteria för social anxiety disorder according to DSM-5.
The study was seriously limited due to a very small sample and uncomparable groups. Therefore the conclusions are weak and tentative. The results were somewhat conflicting giving no support to the notion that, in comparison to IR alone, emotion regulation by visualizing a safe place given prior to IR would lead to a larger reduction of symptomatology, memory distress, image vividness, and a more beneficial restructuring of the meaning of images. Nevertheless, on image distress and frequency the added intervention of a safe place tended to enhance the effect of IR.
In conclusion, the study provided some promising leads to future research on the role of emotion regulation as a way to enhance the effects of IR. (Less)
