Abstract
A major part of the world’s population today consists of young people, yet they are excluded from the process of peacebuilding as they are either demonised or infantilised. To address this issue the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2250 in 2015 which relates to youth, peace and security. This has led to an increase in attention of the positive role of youth for constructive change. The aim of this study is to determine how youth agency is expressed in peacebuilding through youth organisations. The study uses theories of spaces of agency and youth participation in the process from conflict to peace. These theories focuses on the dynamics of agency rather than focusing on separate actors as earlier research. Building on a qualitative... (More)

The aim of this study is to determine how youth agency is expressed in peacebuilding through youth organisations. The study uses theories of spaces of agency and youth participation in the process from conflict to peace. These theories focuses on the dynamics of agency rather than focusing on separate actors as earlier research. Building on a qualitative content analysis, this thesis examines youth agency in the Liberian peacebuilding process through evaluation of three youth organisations activities for societal change. The study concludes that through youth organisations young people are able to express their agency and leadership in peace and development. In that way, youth-led civil society organisations are unique contributers in the process and it is time to stop looking at youth as victims or perpetrators and harness their agency and energy.
