Abstract
This thesis aims to examine whether archive pedagogy is a useful learning resource in school today, and if so, how this cooperation works in reality. We want to find out how the archive's educational resources are perceived by teachers and students, and where the possible obstacles may lay. By examining how teachers and students perceive the archive education, our study can contribute to better cooperation between the institutions, and serve as a basis for improving and developing the archive-educational activities. We have interviewed teachers who have experience in archive and archive pedagogy, to get their opinions on the subject. The interviews have also been complemented by observations of archive education at archives in Malmö,... (More)
This thesis aims to examine whether archive pedagogy is a useful learning resource in school today, and if so, how this cooperation works in reality. The interviews have also been complemented by observations of archive education at archives in Malmö, Helsingborg and Stockholm. In order to help us understand the development of archives and how this has influenced the archives and their work towards the public we use the Canadian archive theorist Terry Cook and his four paradigms. To shed light on learning processes we are using John Dewey's educational theories, emphasizing the concept of experience. For our study, the school's curricula are also weighed in to show the relationship and relevance of these to our research area. The results of our study show that archive education has many advantages and may be an excellent learning resource, but to achieve this, the archive needs to reach out to their potential users in a greater extent than today, and thus be visible, and available to the school.
