Abstract
What's the point of a back cover? When converting an initially printed book into a digital format, the front cover is almost always included in the electronic file, the back cover however, is not. The aim of this thesis is to examine the back covers of picturebooks, based on what function they serve in relation to the work, as well as to intermediaries and readers of the work. With the theoretical starting point that there are no immaterial texts, there are plenty of reasons to investigate the publishing formats still most common today. In this context, it is worthwhile to pay the paratext particular interest. The paratext is a concept meant to describe the elements in a published work that surround and accompany the text, e.g. the title,... (More)

The paratext is a concept meant to describe the elements in a published work that surround and accompany the text, e.g. the title, a preface, a dedication or a cover. The paratext thereby both presents the text and makes it present. Peritexts are the parts of the paratext that are physically attached to the work. By describing and analyzing the peritexts that appear on the back cover of a number of picturebooks, the intention is to bring out and discuss the functions of the back cover.

By using qualitative content analysis as a way to discover patterns and themes among the books, I have examined the back cover of 203 picturebooks. As a first step, I identified every peritext present and grouped them according to what they represent. On this basis, I describe and analyze these groups of peritexts based on what function they serve in relation to the work, its readers and intermediaries. As parts of my result, I have found five categories to describe the overall functions that the back cover peritexts serve: identifying peritexts, interpretive peritexts, legitimizing peritexts, additional peritexts and commercial peritexts. The categories overlap and often occur in different combinations. Apart from the categorization of the peritextual functions, the results of the study show, in numerous ways, that the peritexts to a large extent have a potential impact on the work and how intermediaries and readers may use and perceive it. Picturebooks seem to be a literary genre that is particularly inclined to present the book as a deliberately designed whole of literary work and material form. This knowledge could be of interest to everyone reading or working with picturebooks and library functions such as collection management and readers advisory. (Less)
