The digital and technical developments had a significant impact on the social platforms of the internet with the rise of internet cultures and phenomenons such as the image-board 4chan.
The image-board 4chan represents the type of material that raises questions in how archives should handle and curate offensive and controversial material. The aim for this paper is to reflect upon and analyse how both institutions and smaller archival projects handle controversial and offensive material such as 4chan. The paper will also analyse how to deal with aspects of the material where anonymity and ephemerality play key roles in its formation. The paper will be using interviews with archive institutions and smaller archive projects to construct what kind of approaches there are within the archive community towards web based material with offensive content. The paper will also map how different organisations depending on their social position reflect their attitude concerning controversial material in the preservation and curation of the material.
