Abstract
Support from a midwife through labour is unique for its ability to empower women to trust
their own physical and mental capacities. The purpose of this thesis was to highlight the role
of midwives in providing support to mothers during childbirth. In this qualitative study, ten
midwives from two clinics were interviewed, and the data was collected via semi-structured,
group-focused interviews. The data suggested that the level of support offered by midwives
varies depending on the hospital context and personal preferences (of midwives and patients).

The midwives all concluded that they view the support they offer women during childbirth as
their most crucial role as professionals, but this support can be compromised due to medical
responsibilities and a stressful workload. If work conditions involved one midwife per woman
in labour, overall stress for midwives could have been decreased. This staffing decision could
contribute to a more positive experience of childbirth for the mother, including less
interventions and complications and, by extension, a better start to parenthood. (Less)
