Abstract
Sweden has in recent years seen an uprising in gun-use within socioeconomically weak areas and within gangs. Currently, political discourse circle around dissecting the matter of illegal weaponry attempting to find a way in which to curb deadly violence. Sweden has in recent years seen an uprising in gun-use within socioeconomically weak areas and within gangs. Currently, political discourse circle around dissecting the matter of illegal weaponry attempting to find a way in which to curb deadly violence. This study aims to create an understanding of the mechanics between the law and the criminal sub-world with the help of looking at the effects of gun amnesties. In Sweden during 2018, the government put into effect a time limited amnesty for the fourth time since -1993. Even though several guns are being turned in, this study has found that criminals have more incentives to keep their illegal weapons than to relieve them. Mainly guns that are eligible for licensing and legal use are being turned in, often since the possessors of these weapons lack in legal knowledge and view the amnesty as a way of avoiding potential criminal charges. This study investigates what the rationalizations are within the criminal world attempting to understand why criminals own weapons as well as what might change that. The study could help Swedish authorities in its future endeavors attempting to stop deadly violence as well as guns being used by gangs as a mean of deadly force. Should Swedish authorities resort to using further weapon amnesties to curb the issue of shootings and guns, this study could aid in increasing their effectiveness. (Less)
