Abstract
In 1961 a concrete wall through the city of Berlin was erected and further determined the division between a once united Germany into West and East Germany. In East Germany the communist party had the power and the newspaper Neues Deutschland to spread its propaganda, until the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The aim of this paper is to look further into how the newspaper Neues Deutschland portrayed the Berlin wall during the time period of 1961 to 2009, from the building of the wall to the 20 year anniversary of the fall, and how the newspaper relates to its communist past. This is done by using a narrative analysis to see how the articles build their story and rhetoric analysis is used as a complement to highlight the details such as... (More)

This is done by using a narrative analysis to see how the articles build their story and rhetoric analysis is used as a complement to highlight the details such as the choice of words. The results show that there has been a considerable change in the rhetoric regarding the Berlin wall, from a really positive one between 1961 and 1989 to a first neural one in 1999 and then a negative one in 2009. It could also be deducted that the authors and the newspaper seem to distance themselves from their communist past in the later years. (Less)
