- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how school counselors work with pupils in a drug preventive way and furthermore to examine possibilities, obstacles and efficiency experienced by school counselors in that work. In order to achieve the purpose of the study seven qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with school counselors. The interviews were transcribed, coded and analyzed through a theoretical framework guided by the concepts of structure, discretion and institutional logics. We also used our previous research in the field of the study in our analysis. The study found that drug prevention work is not often prioritized due to the educational aims of the school. Even though the school counselors’ knowledge in the field is good the ability to work with drug prevention is hindered by structural constraints and a varying level of importance within teachers, principals and politicians. The attitudes towards drugs and drug use among adolescents also have an impact on how the school counselors succeed in the drug preventive work. Age-appropriate drug prevention education and having the knowledge to identify pupils at high-risk for drug problems at an early stage were shown as the way the preventive work should be performed. The school counselors in our study claimed that one of the key components of effective prevention is having the ability to work with other professions such as the police and social services as well as the parents of the pupils. To develop the drug preventive work the structural constraints need to decrease in order to make time for the school counselors’ ability to prepare and to get access to the pupils
when they are in school. Furthermore, politicians and principals need to see the importance of early preventions and make sure that the resources needed are available. (Less)
