Abstract
Traditionally, work on road safety analysis is based on accident statistics, but usually not in a structured and systematic way. Accident statistics provide an indicator of which sites are prone to personal injuries but do not represent an adequate indicator for assessing the road safety situation of the sites. This master thesis has been developed in order to create an understanding that preventive road safety work should not be based solely on accident statistics. Using information in this report from the literature study, the document analyzes and interviews with transport engineers at municipalities, a methodology for preventive road safety analysis, adapted to smaller municipalities with limited resources, is worked out. The case study of the report aims to test and demonstrate how the proposed method does work in practice. In the case study four places in Hässleholm municipality in Sweden with different types of intersections were studied. This demonstrates and tests the applicability of the method at different types of locations. The result, whether the site in question is considered traffic safe or not, from the method was obtained in a short period of time. The method quickly creates an idea and indication of the road safety situation in places and stretches. In order to draw conclusions about the validity and generalisability of the proposed method, further studies need to be carried out. (Less)
