Abstract
The purpose of our study was to explore unit managers of nursing homes perspective of the different forms of accommodations for elderly couples and their discretion in the work with elderly couples’ requests. We used a qualitative method in this study and performed semi-structured interviews with six different unit managers of nursing homes that operate in three different townships in Skåne, Sweden. We used a qualitative method in this study and performed semi-structured interviews with six different unit managers of nursing homes that operate in three different townships in Skåne, Sweden. The theoretical framework in our analysis is discretion. The findings showed great variations in how the unit managers perceived their discretion. They had a positive view on the new law relating couples living together in institutional care and found that the decisions regarding assistance for the elderly could be executed in different ways and therefore enabled discretion. Some found the discretion to be limited and some found it bigger, in different decisions. Decisions regarding which apartments the elderly couple should live in where not the unit managers’ to take however decisions regarding where the elderly could sleep and how the apartments could be furnished enabled discretion for the unit managers. Living separately and together both had disadvantages and advantages according to the unit managers where dementia represents the largest issue for elderly couples living together but the accomodation serves a feeling of security. Living separately causes a sense of loneliness but simultaneously freedom for the partner. However the most favorable accommodation seemed to be that the couple had two different apartments at the same institution. (Less)
