- The purpose of the thesis work is to investigate how contractors can involve environmental certification in the tender phase of a project and provide a basis for solutions to problems that may arise in environmental certification with CEEQUAL. CEEQUAL (The Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment & Awards Scheme) is a certification system for assessing environmental issues and social aspects of infrastructure projects. - The purpose of the thesis work is to investigate how contractors can involve environmental certification in the tender phase of a project and provide a basis for solutions to problems that may arise in environmental certification with CEEQUAL. CEEQUAL (The Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment & Awards Scheme) is a certification system for assessing environmental issues and social aspects of infrastructure projects. The certification system encourages clients, designers and contractors to do more than the legal requirements in the sustainability area to achieve economic, social and environmental results. In this essay literature study and interview study methods were used when collecting the data. From the interview study it is stated that the respondents have experienced problems during the certification. They have for instance illuminated the following issues: - There’s a lot of work at the end of the certification when all the evidence is compiled.
- It is difficult to get all people from the project involved in the certification.
- It can create frustration if the project is time-consuming. Production always goes first and then the environmental work can be overridden. The result also shows that at the tender stage one should bear in mind that there is a cost to certify that depends on the size of the project. It should also be borne in mind that it is very good to have an extra resource that can work full time with CEEQUAL work and various environmental work. This is important as it can take a lot of time to certify a project. If a person works to compile all the evidence and educate people in the project, everyone becomes more aware and involved in the certification and the certification becomes much easier. At the conclusion of this essay it is stated that CEEQUAL can be a good tool for highlighting environmental work in production and making people more aware that we need to work more sustainably. It is also noted that all respondents thought it was difficult and took a lot of time to structure all evidence. If a standard document were developed, the contractors would save a lot of time and money. (Less)
