Abstract
Men's violence against women has been a society problem for a long time, and still is. There are several different authorities involved regarding violence within intimate relationships. The study aims to specifically investigate how healthcare deals with abused women, based on women's own perspectives and stories. The purpose of this study is to describe how important it is for healthcare to handle abused women by identifying, documenting, supporting and assisting them in order to allow the spiral of violence to break, before the violence becomes so serious that there is a possibility that it can lead to the woman's death.

Men's violence against women has been a society problem for a long time, and still is. There are several different authorities involved regarding violence within intimate relationships. The purpose of this study is to describe how important it is for healthcare to handle abused women by identifying, documenting, supporting and assisting them in order to allow the spiral of violence to break, before the violence becomes so serious that there is a possibility that it can lead to the woman's death.
The study is based on a combination of methods, where data was collected by using a quantitative and qualitative approach, which contains a survey of 15 respondents and then unstructured interviews with two respondents. The empirics is analyzed using Roscoe Pound's theory, law in books and law in action and Mathiesen's book, the right of society. The theories will help explain the discrepancy between the healthcare and directives and their actual work in practice regarding the handling of abused women.
In previous research, it is apparent that healthcare workers feel that they don´t have enough knowledge and competence to provide the abused women the care they need, which supports our findings indicated from the abused women's perspectives. The conclusion of this study indicates that there is a discrepancy between how the healthcare follows the regulations and directives, compared with the way the abused women are actually handled by the healthcare.
